Questions people actually ask
- Does the new tax regime allow HRA exemption?
- No. HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is available only if you're on the old regime — the new regime's larger standard deduction replaces most exemptions and deductions entirely.
- What counts as a metro city for HRA purposes?
- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai are treated as metro (50% of Basic+DA); every other city, including Bangalore, Pune, and Hyderabad, is non-metro (40%) for this specific calculation.
- Can I claim HRA exemption if I live with my parents and pay them rent?
- Yes, if the arrangement is genuine — a rent agreement and actual bank transfers to your parent, who then declares it as rental income. Cash payments with no paper trail are a common reason this claim gets rejected on scrutiny.
