Questions people actually ask
- Why is my take-home lower than CTC minus tax?
- CTC also includes your employer's PF contribution — money that goes into your retirement account, not your bank account, plus your own PF contribution which is deducted before tax. Both reduce take-home without being 'lost' anywhere; they're retirement savings.
- Which tax regime should I pick?
- This tool defaults to whichever regime gives you more take-home right now. If you're close between the two, or curious how much more you'd need to invest for the old regime to win, the regime breakeven calculator answers that specifically.
- I don't know my exact Basic and HRA split — is the estimate accurate?
- It's a reasonable approximation (roughly 40% Basic, with HRA at 50%/40% of Basic for metro/non-metro), close to what many private-sector offer letters actually use. Once you have your real offer letter or payslip, switch to entering exact figures for a precise number.
